About Seoraksan National Park (southern edge)

Seoraksan National Park, located in the northeastern province of Gangwon-do, South Korea, encompasses one of the most scenic and ecologically rich areas in the Korean Peninsula. The park stretches across 398.22 square kilometers but the southern edge presents a distinct blend of steep granite peaks, dense forests, and crystal-clear rivers. This part of the park provides access to less crowded trails and serves as a gateway to explore the park’s iconic rock formations such as Ulsanbawi and the towering Daecheongbong Peak, Korea’s third highest peak at 1,708 meters. The park’s diverse ecosystems range from temperate deciduous forests at lower elevations to alpine plants near the summits, supporting over 1,400 species of animals and plants including endangered species like the Korean goral and Siberian musk deer. Historically, the area has cultural significance with Buddhist temples such as Sinheungsa located nearby, which offers visitors a mix of spiritual heritage and natural splendor. Popular activities on the southern edge include hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, and seasonal foliage tours in autumn. Winter also brings opportunities for snowshoeing and experiencing frost-hued landscapes. The southern sector appeals to visitors seeking nature immersion with less tourist traffic and provides well-maintained trails for various skill levels. Overall, Seoraksan National Park’s southern edge stands as a vital natural and cultural treasure for outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists alike.
